Transfer size estimates
Below are download links to access the master spreadsheets that provide estimates of the relative size of transfers between constituencies following every major review since 1885. Data from the 6,500 separate sub-Areas of the United Kingdom which have had a unique constituency history are combined to provide these estimates, which have been used to determine the type of transfer line shown on the Constituency Charts. A few points to note:
There are separate spreadsheets for England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland reflecting the different years in which these countries were affected by major constituency boundary changes.
Data obtained from each Constituency Group's spreadsheet is amalgamated in a large table in a sheet labelled 'Data'.
This data is used to create a series of Pivot Tables for each major review showing the percentage of electorate obtained by each constituency from its predecessors. These are in the series of tabs to the left of the tab labelled 'Data'. The second column 'Sum of %2' in each Pivot Table gives an estimate for each constituency of what percentage of the new constituency came from its predecessors.
To the right of the tab 'Data' there are tabs (with 'R' after the year) which expresses the same data, but the other way around, i.e. what percentage of each old constituency went to form its successors.
In a few cases where different constituencies have existed with the same name (e.g. Wellington or Richmond), the names in the master spreadsheet have been amended to distinguish between them.
The estimates published here do not include those transfers arising from interim reviews. For some of the more significant interim reviews transfer estimates have been made for the affected areas. If you are interested in accessing these, please get in touch using the website's contact form.
